Chapter 1: English Introduction

❖ What is English ?

Ans → English is an international language which is used all over world as a popular language.

❖ अँग्रेजी एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय भाषा हैं, जिसका प्रयोग पूरे विश्व में एक लोकप्रिय भाषा के रूप में किया जाता हैं।

❖ What is Language ?

Ans → Language is the medium by which we express our ideas, feelings and emotions to one-another.

❖ भाषा एक ऐसा माध्यम हैं जिसके द्वारा हम अपने अनुभवों एवं भावनाओं को एक-दूसरे के समक्ष प्रस्तुत करते हैं।

❖ What is literature ?

Ans → Literature is the mirror of society in which we study all types of activities and happenings of our day-to-daily life.

❖ साहित्य समाज का एक दर्पण हैं जिसमें हम दिन-प्रतिदिन के क्रियाकलापों एवं घटनाओं का अध्ययन करते हैं।

❖ What is Grammar ?

Ans → Grammar is the base of language by which we learn reading, writing and speaking correctly in any language.

❖ व्याकरण भाषा का आधार हैं, जिसके द्वारा हम शुद्ध-शुद्ध पढना, लिखना एवं बोलना सिखते हैं।

How many types of Grammar ?

Ans → There are five types of Grammar.

(a) Orthography (वर्ण विचार) (b) Etymology (शब्द विचार) (c) Syntax (वाक्य विचार)

What is Orthography ?

Ans → Orthography is the branch of english grammar in which we study all types letter an english language.

❖ वर्ण-विचार व्याकरण की एक शाखा हैं जिसमें हम अँग्रेजी के सभी अक्षरों का अध्ययन करते हैं।

(d) Prosody (छंद विचार) (e) Punction (चिन्ह विचार)

What is Orthography ?

Ans → Orthography is the branch of english grammar in which we study all types letter an english language.

❖ वर्ण-विचार व्याकरण की एक शाखा हैं जिसमें हम अँग्रेजी के सभी अक्षरों का अध्ययन करते हैं।

What is Etymology ?

Ans → Etymology is the branch of english grammar in which we study all the words and its classification.

❖ शब्द-विचार अँग्रेजी व्याकरण की एक शाखा है जिसमें हम शब्दों एवं उसके वर्गीकरण के बारे में अध्ययन करते हैं।

What is Syntax ?

Ans → The study of the principles and processes by which sentences are made in a language is called syntax.

❖ किसी भाषा में जिन सिद्धान्तों एवं प्रक्रियाओं के द्वारा वाक्य बनते हैं, उनके अध्ययन को भाषा विज्ञान में वाक्यविन्यास या सिन्टैक्स (syntax) कहते हैं। वाक्य के क्रमबद्ध अध्ययन को ‘वाक्य- विज्ञान’ कहते हैं। वाक्यविज्ञान, पदों के पारस्परिक संबंध का अध्ययन है। वाक्य भाषा का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण अंग है। मनुष्य अपने विचारों की अभिव्यक्ति वाक्यों के माधयम से ही करता है। अतः वाक्य भाषा की लघुतम पूर्ण इकाई है।

What is letter ?

Ans → A letter is the smallest unit with the help of wich we write a word.

❖ अक्षर वह सबसे छोटी इकाई हैं जिसका प्रयोग कर हम कोई शब्द लिखते हैं।

What is alphabet ?

Ans → All the letters of English language are called alphabet.

❖ अँग्रेजी भाषा के सभी अक्षरों को वर्णमाला कहते हैं।

Example:– A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z (Capital Alphabet) and a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z (Small Alphabet)

Types of alphabet:

Ans → There are three types of alphabet.

(a) Vowels (स्वर वर्ण)

(b) Consonants (व्यंजन वर्ण)

(c) Semivowel & Semiconsonants

❖ Vowels:→ a, e, i, o and u are called vowels.

❖ a, e, i, o और u को Vowels कहते हैं।

❖ Consonants:→ all the letters except a, e, i, o and u are called consonants.

❖ a, e, i, o और u के अलावा शेष letters को Consonants कहा जाता हैं।

❖ Semivowels & Semiconsonants:→

❍ Semivowels:→ If ‘w’ and ‘y’ comes in a word after first letter anywhere then it is called semivowels. Example:— very, new, few, dew, etc.

➥ अगर ‘w’ और ‘y’ किसी शब्द में प्रथम अक्षर को छोडकर कहीं भी आए, तो उसे Semi- vowels कहते हैं।

❍ Semiconsonants:→ If ‘w’ and ‘y’ comes in a word very start then it is called semiconsonants. Example:— yet, work, you, watch, etc.

➥ अगर ‘w’ और ‘y’ किसी शब्द के प्रथम अक्षर में आए, तो उसे Semiconsonants कहते हैं।

※ What is Words ?

Ans → A group of alphabet which make a complete meaning is called words.

❖ अक्षरों का वैसा समूह जिसका पूर्ण अर्थ निकलता हों, वह शब्द (Words) कहलाता हैं।

Example:— ‘good’ का सही अर्थ ‘अच्छा’ होता है लेकिन odog का सही अर्थ नहीं होता हैं। अतः good एक word हैं जबकि odog एक word नहीं हैं।

※ What is Sentence ?

Ans → A group of words which makes complete meaning is called a sentence.

❖ शब्द या शब्दों का वैसा समूह जिसका पूर्ण अर्थ निकलता हौ, वह वाक्य कहलाता है।

Example:— ‘Ram is a boy.’ से ‘राम एक लड़का हैं।’ पूर्ण अर्थ के साथ वाक्य बनता हैं जबकि ‘a ram is boy’ से वाक्य का कोई अर्थ नहीं होता हैं।

❍ How many Types of Sentence ?

Ans → There are five types of sentence.

  1. Assertive/Statement Sentence (निश्चयात्मक/सामान्य वाक्य) (2.) Interrogative Sentence (प्रश्नात्मक वाक्य) (3.) Imperative Sentence (आदेशात्मक/विधिवाचक वाक्य) (4.) Optative Sentence (कमात्मक/इच्छाबोधक वाक्य) (5.) Exclamatory Sentence (आश्चरबोधक/विस्मादिबोधक वाक्य)

(1.) Assertive Sentence:→ A sentence that makes a statement is called an assertive sentence.

❖ जो वाक्य किसी कथन को व्यक्त करता हैं, वह Assertive Sentence कहलाता हैं। Examples:- I am going to school.

He will come soon. I am going to market. Ram is not a good boy. She reads In class 11th.

► Note:→ Assertive Sentence में सामान्यतया पहले Subject आता है, तब Verb और फिर अन्य पद। वाक्य के अंत में full stop ( . ) अवश्य रहता है।

(2.) Interrogative Sentence:→ A sentence that asks a question is called an interrogative sentence.

❖ जिस वाक्य के द्वारा कोई प्रश्न किया जाता हैं, वह Interrogative Sentence कहलाता हैं। Examples:- What is your name ?

What are you doing ? Are you a student ? Who will help you ? What do you ? Are you teaching ?

► Note:→ Interrogative Sentence किसी Interrogative Word या Auxiliary Verb से शुरू होता है और इसके अंत में Question Mark (?) निश्चित रूप से रहता हैं। whom, who, whose, which, what, where, when, how, why, etc Interrogative Words हैं।

➤ How many types of interrogative sentence ? Ans → There are two types of interrogative sentence. (i) SIS (Simple Interrogative Sentence) (ii) DIS (Double Interrogative Sentence)

(i) SIS:→ All types of Yes/No related question are called Simple Interro- gative Sentence.

►SIS Recog:→ SIS always starts with helping verb.

Examples:- Are you going ? Are you doing ? Do you read ? Are you ready ? Do they teaching ? Is he a student ?

(ii) DIS:→ Those sentences which indicate a sense of reason are called Double Interrogative Sentence.

►DIS Recog:– DIS always starts with ‘Wh question’ word. Examples:– What is your name ? Where are they going ? What are you doing ? What do you work ?

(3.) Imperative Sentence:→ A sentence that expresses an order, a request or a piece of advice is called an imperative sentence.

❖ जिस वाक्य से आज्ञा, अनुरोध या सलाह का भाव प्रकट होता हैं, वह Imperative Sentence कहलाता हैं।

Examples:- Bring a glass of water. Please help me. Don’t go there. Take medicine in time.

► Note:→ ऐसे वाक्यों में Subject ‘You’ सामान्यतया छिपा रहता हैं तथा वाक्य के अंत में Full Stop ( . ) प्रयुक्त रहता हैं।

(4) Optative Sentence:→ A sentence that expresses some curse, blessing, prayer or which is called an optative sentence.

❖ जिस वाक्य से शाप, आशीर्वाद, प्रार्थना या इच्छा का भाव व्यक्त होता हैं, वह Optative Sentence कहलाता हैं।

Examples:- May you die of cholera!

Note:→ Optative Sentence प्रायः May से प्रारंभ होता हैं और Exclamation के चिन्ह ( ! ) से समाप्त होता हैं। कुछ वाक्यों में May छिपा भी रह सकता हैं, फिर भी वाक्य के भाव या अर्थ में परिवर्तन नहीं होता हैं।

Examples:—

God bless you! = May God bless you! Long live the king! = May the king live long! God Save the king! = May God save the king!

(5) Exclamatory Sentence:→ A sentence that expresses some sudden or strong feeling of the mind is called an exclamatory sentence.

❖ जिस वाक्य से प्रसन्नता, दुःख, आश्चर्य, घृणा या प्रशंसा की तीव्र अभिव्यक्ति का बोध होता हैं, वह Exclamatory Sentence कहलाता हैं।

Examples:— What a fall! What a beautiful scene it is! How dark the night is! Well done! Mohan. Alas! I am ruined.

Note:→ ऐसी अभिव्यक्तियों में Exclamations के बाद Sign of Exclamation ( ! ) रहता हैं।

Affirmative and Negative Sentences

ऊपर आपने Sentence के प्रकार और उनके examples को देखा हैं। ये Sentences या तो Affirmative हैं या Negative. जिस Sentence में कोई भी Negative word प्रयुक्त नहीं रहता हैं, वह Affirmative Sentence कहलाता हैं और जिस Sentence में कोई भी Negative word प्रयुक्त रहता हैं, वह Negative Sentence कहलाता हैं। no, not, never, none, nobody, nothing, neither, nor, etc Negative Words हैं।

Affirmative Sentence
He is a boy.
You go.

Negative Sentence
He is not a boy.
You do not go.

Man is mortal. He is a student. You are reading. He is a teacher.

Man is not mortal. He is not a student. You are not reading. He is not a teacher.
